St. Timothy’s Most
Frequently Asked Questions
If you have
additional questions, please don’t
hesitate to ask a staff member. Preschool Questions
When my child has to use the bathroom what should they do?
Your child needs to tell one of the teachers/aides that they
have to go to the bathroom and they will take your child at any
time.
What if my child has an accident while at school?
If your child has an accident, we will take them to the
bathroom and change them with the extra clothes you have
provided.
What if my child is crying and very upset and won't go into
the classroom without me?
We will try and take your child from you and comfort them
without you in the classroom. We have found that it gets very
crowded and overwhelming in the classroom if we allow parents
to come in with their child. If your child continues to have a
difficult time settling, down we will call you. We haven't had
to call a parent yet.
What if my child is allergic to snacks that are being
served?
You may bring a snack to substitute what we are having for your
child to eat. This is only if your child is allergic to the
snack on that day, not if your child doesn't like the snack.
When it is my child's birthday can I bring something to
share?
Yes. Please talk to your child's teacher prior to the child's
birthday so that they know not to plan snack for that day. You
may bring a birthday treat to share (cupcakes, cookies). Please
no goodie bags. Your child will have a chance to make a
birthday crown, be sung to, blow out our birthday candle, and
celebrate their day with the children in the class.
Can I volunteer to help in the classroom?
When your child's teacher is looking for volunteers, there will
be a sign up sheet on the sign in/sign out clipboard. If there
is something you would like to do that you don't see a sign up
for, please talk to your child's teacher.
If I have a concern who can I talk to?
Please go to your child's teacher first with your concerns. If
you feel like your concerns have not been met, you are invited
to address them with the preschool director or the school
principal.
Can my child wear pull-ups?
No. Your child needs to be fully potty trained and we feel that
by wearing pull-ups your child is not fully potty trained.
My child won't always tell me what they did at school. How
will I know what my child is doing at school?
There are weekly newsletters that you will receive by e-mail or
a hard copy will be sent home. If you have e-mail, your child's
teacher will send it home to you on Friday; if you don't have
e-mail, your child will receive a hard copy in their tote bag.
You can see what the discussion topics are by looking at the
top of the monthly snack calendar.
What if I am late in picking up my child from school?
Call the school and let the office know who you are, who your
child is, and what class they are in. They will then let us
know. If you are more than 15 minutes late, we will check them
in to mid-day care.
How does drop off work?
Come down the pathway and go through the swinging gate to your
child's classroom. The sign in/sign out clipboard will be by
the door. Sign in your child with the time and your signature
and then wait on the sidewalk by the classroom door. Please do
not allow your child to play on the playground before school.
If you are having someone else pick up your child at dismissal
time, please write that person's name clearly on the bottom of
the clipboard.
How does dismissal work?
The clipboard will be out on the other side of the swinging
gate, in the same area as the Preschool Information Whiteboard.
Please sign your child out and wait on that side of the gate.
The children will stay with the aide and the teacher will come
to the gate, pick up the clipboard and dismiss the children
only if they are signed out to the appropriate person. We do
art everyday and send it home on a daily basis, so look for
your child's artwork on the rack in this area. Sometimes we
decide to keep the art and so the art rack will not be outside.
Please don't allow your child to play on the playground after
school because the rest of the school is still in session. You
are welcome to go to the front lawn afterwards to play.
Can my child bring something to school with them that makes
them feel more comfortable? (blanket, toy, stuffed animal)
Your child can bring something with them as long as it stays is
their bag in their cubby so that the item doesn't get lost or
broken. If your child needs to see it, they can go to their
cubby for a visit.
What will my child learn in St. Timothy's preschool?
St.
Timothy’s Preschool focuses on the development of the whole
child, not only the educational portion. Educational
instruction is a part of our program, but is not our focus.
Voyages from Concordia Publishing House provide our
Religion curriculum and Zoophonics provides our introduction to
letters and sounds. Children are taught their numbers, shapes,
colors, and to identify their written name as well as many
other things. Elementary Questions
How
many children are in a classroom?
Class sizes average 12 students.
What
books are being used at St. Timothy’s?
Each grade level uses a variety of books within our
curriculum. Please click
on Academics to see a detailed
breakdown of each grade's
textbooks. In addition to text books, all programs
include lots of extra activities and various types of hands on
learning, related to specific lessons.
Does my
child have to wear a uniform?
Yes, all children in grades JK-5 are required to wear a
uniform. Uniform requirements are available from the school
office or click here on Uniform Policy.
In addition to uniforms, each child has a Spirit Shirt which is
worn for field trips, on special school-wide Spirit Days, and
can be worn in place of any shirt/top on the uniform
list.
Once a month, there are also Free Dress days, on which students
may choose to wear their own clothing instead of their
uniforms.
The
school maintains also maintains a 'uniform closet' where
parents can trade (or purchase at an extreme discount) gently
used uniform pieces.
How
many field trips will my child go on in a year?
All classes except Preschool 3’s go on field trips throughout
the year. The teachers select field trips that correlate with
the curriculum or the time of the year. Each year teachers
choose the field trips that they feel will benefit their
students. Please click on Academics
to download a PDF brochure which details curriculum and class
activities including field trips for each grade level.
What
kind of special projects are expected of my child?
Each teacher has projects they expect their students to
complete. Some projects should be completed with the help of
parents, others without. The students in grades JK through 5
complete several art projects throughout the year under the
direction of our Art Docents. These projects are displayed in
our annual Art Fair. We also encourage all students to
participate in the annual Science Fair. This is a voluntary
activity. Please click on Academics
for general information or on the grade button at the bottom of
the page for grade specific information.
Is my
child expected to perform service hours outside of school?
No. However, the students at St. Timothy’s do participate in
the Kids Who Care program. In this program, under the guidance
of parent volunteers, students perform services for many
different organizations. Each grade level has a specific group
they have adopted for the year as the recipient of their
service hours.
Do
parents have mandatory volunteer hours?
St. Timothy’s encourages parents to
volunteer and offers many opportunities for parents to help the
students in our school. Parents volunteer as art docents,
lunch duty supervisors, library aides, office aides, teachers’
aides, Scrip sellers, Kids Who Care organizers, classroom help,
classroom party organizers, field trip drivers and chaperones,
readers, and more. The school also has occasional
Saturday work days to do maintenance and repair of facilities,
grounds work, painting, etc. Parents are also encouraged
to participate in the Home and School
Club.
Is
financial aid available if our family should need it?
Yes, there is a limited amount of financial available each
year. There is an application process that is submitted to the
School Board for review. For more information click on
Financial Aid.
Do you
have a hot lunch program?
We offer "Pizza for Lunch" on Fridays. Parents
can preorder, Pizza, Juice, Water, and/or Carrots &
Dip. Parent Volunteers serve these items on Fridays at
lunch hour. Students still bring their own midday snacks
on these days.
What
kind of fundraisers are we expected to participate in?
St. Timothy’s holds an annual Phonathon early in the school
year. This is our main fundraiser. We also participate in the
e-scrip program and sell Scrip. There is a school wide
family event at Golfland in September to support the Art
Docents program.
The 4th/5th grade classes sell See’s candy to help offset the cost of Science camp. St.
Timothy’s Home and School Club hosts a Family Fun Night once
a year in the Fall. The
monies raised are used to fund the various programs that the
Home and School Club sponsor. The Home and School Club also
sponsors “family nights” at various area restaurants.
All of these programs are
voluntary.
Do you
have day care before and/or after school?
Day care is available before school and after school. All
Daycare is on a drop-in basis and the cost is prorated based on
the number of hours used. Please click on
Daycare for detailed
information.
